This Channel scene is typical of the work of Markes with a gale blowing and a stormy sky offshore. The typical cobalt blue seas usually found in his paintings has been tempered with a deeper blue reflecting the lack of sunlight. A beautiful painting. Cleaned & reframed.

Full of activity, this busy scene shows a paddle steamer coming into port - perhaps Newhaven from Dieppe around 1870. This painting has not yet been cleaned and would undoubtedly look amazing once it was. 49x34cm.

Merchant Ship in The Channel,1868
This is a majestic painting. The setting is superb as is the wind-effect in the sails, blustery weather with a yacht tacking astern of the Danish merchant ship. 61x53cm. Has yet to be cleaned. One of his best pieces and the work of a mature marine artist.

This setting can be found just off Calais and has sadly yellowed with too much light. However it has not been professionally cleaned as yet so there is hope some of the original colours can be restored. 57x39cm.
